1. The leather must be thoroughly cleaned and correctly prepared before dyeing. Remove finishes or residues that could prevent the dye from penetrating evenly.
2. Shake the bottle thoroughly before application.
3. Always test your chosen colour and technique on an inconspicuous area before proceeding.
4. Apply Teinture Française evenly and progressively to the prepared leather.
5. Allow the dye to penetrate and dry before assessing the colour.
6. Build additional colour gradually where necessary rather than attempting to achieve the final shade with excessive product in one application.
7. Once completely dry, finish the leather with an appropriate Saphir Beauté du Cuir care product for the material being treated.

Teinture Française is intended to transform lighter colours into darker colours. It cannot be used to dye a dark leather to a lighter shade.

Dyeing leather is fundamentally different from applying a coloured shoe cream. Once a penetrating dye enters the leather, you are making a much more permanent change, so preparation and patience matter enormously.

When creating a new colour or patina, I recommend approaching the final shade progressively. A lighter first application gives you an opportunity to evaluate how that particular leather accepts the dye before committing to greater depth. You can always build a darker result; reversing a colour that has already penetrated the leather is considerably more difficult.

And remember that the original leather colour influences the final result. Think of the existing colour as part of your palette rather than a blank white canvas.
