1. Ensure that the footwear or leather article is dry before brushing.
2. For preliminary cleaning, brush the surface gently to remove loose dust and superficial dirt.
3. Apply the appropriate cream or wax polish with a separate cloth or application brush.
4. Allow the care product to dry according to its instructions.
5. Brush the leather using quick, light strokes without applying excessive pressure.
6. Continue across the entire surface until excess product has been removed and the desired shine develops.
7. Pay particular attention to seams and creases where dried product may accumulate.
8. Remove loose residue from the bristles after use and store the brush in a dry place.

Horsehair performs best with speed rather than pressure. Use brisk, light strokes and allow the movement of the soft bristles to remove excess product and develop the shine. Pressing too firmly can flatten the bristles and make polishing less effective.

I recommend keeping one horsehair brush exclusively for preliminary dusting and another for final polishing. A brush that has absorbed cream or wax should not later be used on suede, fabric or light-coloured articles.

Polishing brushes also accumulate pigment over time. Dedicate separate brushes to light and dark colour families to prevent residual polish from transferring onto another pair of shoes.
