1. Before polishing, use the brush to remove dust, dirt, and any excess wax from the leather.
2. Apply your cream or wax separately using a Saphir Médaille d'Or Spreading Brush or Cotton Chamois Cloth. Do not use the Polishing Brush to apply polish.
3. Allow the applied waxes to dry according to the instructions for the product being used.
4. Brush the leather to remove excess wax and develop a subtle shine.
5. For a higher shine, finish with a softer horsehair brush using quick, light buffing strokes.

Think of this as a working brush rather than your final finishing brush. The firmer boar bristles are excellent when I want a little more action—whether that is clearing dust from a pronounced grain or removing excess wax after polishing. Once the surface is clean and even, I switch to horsehair when I want to bring out a finer shine.

I also recommend keeping separate brushes for light and dark polishes. Over time, every polishing brush collects traces of pigment and wax, and separating them is an easy way to avoid transferring unwanted colour onto lighter leather. Saphir specifically recommends matching the bristle colour to the polish being used.
