1. Remove dust and loose surface dirt with a clean, soft cotton cloth.
2. Shake the bottle thoroughly before use.
3. Test Vernis Rife on an inconspicuous area.
4. Dampen the included cotton chamois with a small amount of product.
5. Apply evenly across the patent leather using gentle circular movements.
6. Allow the product to dry for approximately three minutes.
7. Buff with a clean, dry cotton cloth to restore the glossy finish.

Do not use conventional leather creams, wax polishes or abrasive brushes on the patent surface.

One of the most common mistakes I see is treating patent leather like smooth calfskin. Its shine comes from a lacquered coating, not from polish applied to the surface. Conventional creams cannot penetrate this coating, while wax polishes can accumulate on top and leave the finish cloudy. I apply Vernis Rife with a soft cotton cloth and buff with another clean section of cloth—never with a bristle brush.

If a specific patent leather colour is not available in Vernis Rife, Teinture Française can be applied directly to the patent leather without removing its shine or damaging the patent finish. Once the colour has dried, apply Vernis Rife Incolore over the top to help maintain, clean and restore the glossy surface. This is particularly useful for colour-specific repairs or shades that are not available in the Vernis Rife range. As always, test the products first on an inconspicuous area.

The Black formula can visually improve light scuffs and small areas where black patent leather has lost some intensity, but it cannot repair a deep scratch or a crack in the lacquer. Once that coating has physically split, no maintenance product can fully reverse the damage. Regular care is therefore much more effective than attempting restoration after cracking has begun.

I also store light-coloured patent leather away from dark shoes, coloured tissue paper and plastic packaging. Patent finishes can absorb transferred colour during prolonged contact, and these stains are often extremely difficult, if not impossible, to remove. Neutral Vernis Rife is the correct choice for light colours and for any patent leather where additional pigment is not required.
