1. Remove the laces when treating footwear so you can comfortably reach the tongue and leather surrounding the eyelets.
2. Brush the leather thoroughly with a clean horsehair brush to remove dust and loose surface dirt. Rénovateur provides gentle cleaning as part of its conditioning action, but heavily soiled leather should be properly cleaned before conditioning with the appropriate cleaner.
3. Test first on an inconspicuous area, particularly when working with delicate, light-coloured, antiqued, hand-finished, or highly absorbent leather.
4. Using a clean cotton cloth, take a very small amount of Rénovateur. A little product goes a long way; it is preferable to begin with too little rather than applying a heavy layer.
5. Massage the cream into the leather using small circular motions, working methodically across the entire surface. Concentrate particularly on areas that feel dry or have lost some of their suppleness.
6. Apply a thin, even coat. The objective is to allow the leather to absorb the conditioner rather than leave a thick layer sitting on the surface.
7. Allow the Rénovateur to absorb and dry before buffing. This gives the conditioning ingredients time to penetrate the leather.
8. Buff thoroughly with a clean horsehair brush using brisk strokes. This removes any remaining excess product and develops the leather's natural shine.

For leather that is particularly dry, evaluate the surface after the first application. If additional nourishment is needed, a second light application is preferable to one heavy application.

Rénovateur can be the final step when a soft, natural shine is desired. For a more complete dress-shoe finish, follow with an appropriate shoe cream to restore or enrich colour, then finish with wax polish where additional shine and protection are desired.

Rénovateur is one of those products where less is more. I would much rather condition a dry pair of shoes with two very light applications than overwhelm the leather with one heavy coat.

Pay attention to what the leather tells you. Dry leather will often absorb the first application quite readily. Once properly conditioned, the surface begins to feel supple again and the cream will no longer disappear into the leather as quickly.

I also particularly appreciate Rénovateur when I want to preserve an existing patina. Because it is colourless, you can nourish and revive a beautiful leather without immediately introducing additional pigment.

And remember: Rénovateur is a conditioner first, not a substitute for every stage of shoe care. If a shoe is heavily soiled, clean it properly beforehand. If its colour has faded, follow with a suitable pigmented cream. If you want a high shine, finish with wax polish. Each product performs its own role, and that layered approach is what gives the finest results.
