Select the appropriate length for your footwear and lace according to your preferred style. When replacing an existing pair, measure the original laces to determine the most appropriate length.

The difference between a thin and medium lace may seem small, but proportion matters. I generally favour a medium round lace on footwear with a little more visual weight—Derbies, brogues, and dress boots are excellent examples—where a very fine lace can sometimes appear too delicate.

If you're replacing the original laces on a well-made pair of shoes, use their existing diameter and length as your guide. A properly proportioned lace should complement the shoe rather than become a feature in itself.
